candidates for president of the united states, sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. the candidates are: independent candidate ross perot, governor bill clinton, the democratic nominee, and president george bush, the republican nominee. i am jim lehrer of the macneil- lehrer news hour on pbs, and i will be the moderator for this 90-minute event, which is taking place before an audience in the athletic complex on the campus of washington university in st. louis, missouri. three journalists will be asking questions tonight. they are john mashek of the boston globe, ann compton of abc news, and sander vanocur, a freelance journalist. we will follow a format agreed to by representatives of the clinton and bush campaigns. that agreement contains no restrictions on the content or subject matter of the questions. each candidate will have up to 2 minutes for a closing statement. the order of those, as well as the questioning, was determined by a drawing. the first question goes to mr. perot. he will have 2 minutes to answer, to be followed by rebuttals of one minute each fro

in the united states is shut down and so far so good. traffic around the 405 has been light today. drivers are using surface streets or most of them, i think, are just staying home. it shut down so road crews can demolish what's left of the bridge. the bridge and pillars will be replace sod that the freeway can be widened a bit. the freeway will be closed until monday morning and traffic seems to be getting an it just fine. obviously you can see the construction work right there. >>> caltrans is warning drivers for its plans to shut down the san mateo bridge for to two weekends next month. the shutdown will allow crews to repair a cracked support beam discovered in 2010. the bridge will be closed if all goes as planned from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. october 19th through the 22nd and again those same times the following weekend, october 26th-29th. the dumbarton bridge will be the best alternative for most drivers looking to get across the bay to the peninsula. >>> when we come back we will check in with john miller and mike from san diego or a preview of tonight's giants game, a game you will

will keep the united states from winning back the rider cup after two days of competition. medina and illinois the site and it was a crowd that was a little more ruckus than say what you might see at the masters. u.s. took a lead and quickly added to it this morning. that led to a birdie mickelson and bradty taking on lee westwood and donald. bradley needs to get this birdie put. he and michelson went 7-6. they built a lead. simpson with a long put for par. then laurie one up. the u.s. had a commander lead. but then the europeans rally. tiger woods with steve stricker to pull within one. we'll take a look at donald's tee shot. she's 178 yards away and his seven iron is very much the right club. donald and garcia made the birdie and held on to win 1-up. >> and the play single handedly kept the u.s. in it. mcilroy made five straight birdies. europeans had their first lead after polters birdie at 15. they win it 6-1. u.s. needs 14- 1/2 points over all to win, europeans need 14 points to retain the cup. >>> there's been no madness between the sounders and quakes. quakes jump to a 19 m
